Typing Speed Test
Measure your words per minute and typing accuracy. Choose 15, 30, or 60 seconds. Type the displayed text as quickly and accurately as you can.
The timer starts on your first typed character.
WPM = correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes elapsed. Raw WPM includes current correct and incorrect characters. Accuracy = correct ÷ current typed characters.
How Typing Speed Is Measured
The standard WPM formula divides the number of correct characters by 5 (the average word length in English) and normalizes by elapsed time in minutes. We measure both WPM (correct characters only) and raw WPM (all keystrokes). Accuracy is the ratio of correct keystrokes to total keystrokes. Backspace is supported — correcting an error removes it from your correct count, but the initial error still counts toward your error total.
Scoring
Your score is WPM based on correct characters. Higher is better. Accuracy is shown alongside.
Factors
Keyboard type, familiarity with the text, and fatigue all influence results. Mechanical keyboards may offer a different feel from laptop keyboards.
Tips
Prioritize accuracy over speed — speed follows naturally. Use proper home-row finger placement. Look at the screen, not your hands.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is WPM calculated?
WPM = correct characters divided by 5, then divided by elapsed minutes. The "5" comes from the standard assumption that an average English word is 5 characters long. This is the same method used by most professional typing tests.
What is the difference between WPM and raw WPM?
WPM counts only correctly typed characters. Raw WPM counts all characters including errors. The gap between the two shows how accuracy affects your effective speed.
What is a good typing speed?
Average typing speed is around 40 WPM. Professional typists reach 65–80 WPM. Speeds above 100 WPM are considered excellent. Accuracy above 95% is generally expected for productive typing.
Can I use this test to practice typing?
Yes. Retake the test regularly and track your results on the My Results page. The text changes each session, and practicing with varied content helps build general typing fluency.
