What Is a Good CPS?

Understand MetricRally CPS reference bands for 5, 10, and 30-second tests, and what can affect clicking speed.

CPS — clicks per second — measures how many times you can click a mouse or tap a screen in a given time window. The number is highly dependent on test duration, input device and clicking technique, so it is most useful when you compare like-for-like sessions on the same setup.

Duration Matters

Short CPS tests emphasize burst speed, while longer tests place more emphasis on maintaining a repeatable rhythm. MetricRally therefore keeps 5, 10 and 30-second personal bests separate instead of mixing them into one score.

Clicking Techniques

  • Normal clicking: A straightforward one-finger down-up motion. This is the easiest technique to compare consistently over time.
  • Jitter clicking: Uses rapid muscle tension to create faster clicks, but it can be tiring and is harder to sustain consistently.
  • Drag clicking: Relies on friction across a suitable mouse button and can register multiple clicks very quickly on compatible hardware.
  • Butterfly clicking: Alternates two fingers on the same button to increase short-burst click frequency.

Comfort note: Aggressive clicking techniques can be tiring. Take breaks, keep your hand relaxed, and stop if a technique causes pain or persistent discomfort.

What Affects Your CPS

  • Mouse type: Switch feel, button travel and device firmware can influence how easily rapid clicks register.
  • Input method: Touch screens and mice have different input characteristics, so avoid comparing them as if they were identical.
  • Hand position: A comfortable, repeatable position makes session-to-session comparisons more meaningful.
  • Browser and system load: Heavy background activity can affect how smoothly a browser-based test feels.
